TIP 1:
Be aware that many of the suggested measurements that the books provide for the length of the string for a particular pattern are very off. I usually double or triple what the “how to book” suggests because it typically takes a lot more string to make something that will fit around a child’s wrist, neck, or ankle (particularly for beginner who typically make messy knots).
TIP 2:
A great method that I use to hold the string in place is to have a three ringed binder handy when I’m making a bracelet. Many of the patterns will require that the string is folded in half and a knot is made in the middle, forming a loop above the actual knot. I’ll simply place that loop between on of the three rings in my binder and snap it in place. In this way the binder provides resistance when I’m pulling on the string to make the required knots to make the bracelet. Most books will tell you to just use tape, but typically the tape won’t hold down the string when you’re pulling a knot tight.
*Additionally the binder provides a way for children to make bracelets when traveling in the car.
*Three ringed binders also are a great place to store works in progress.
