I have found that introducing kids to a deck of cards is a great way to keep them busyily interactive due to the nature of the endless possibilities the deck presents. Think of all the fun games like Crazy Eights and Go Fish. One of my favorites is Slap Jack, as children 4years old and up can play. With younger children I usually initiate the game by explaining to them that they have to slap any card that has a face on it (king, queen or jack) so that more “slapping” opportunities are presented and the children stay more involved. So I usually am the dealer who holds the whole deck and flips cards over one at a time until a jack (or face card) appears and it is a race to see who slaps it first. The person with their hand on top of the card gets to keep the pile.
This is one version of many for this game. For those who are unfamiliar with the game there are many ways to “win.” I improvise based on the maturity levels of the children I’m playing with, so use your own judgment. The ultimate goal is to have to most cards at the end and you are the winner.
· Whoever slaps the jack (or face card) gets to keep all those cards. The game continues and until you’re out of cards to flip over. The one with the biggest pile in the end wins.
