The funny thing is...
I guess I didn’t realize the entire name of my blog is “The story behind the name…”, but now that I do realize that is the case I feel as though I have to stick to it as some sort of theme to my blog (which I am not planning on following throughout the existence of this blogging assignment, but rather I’m commenting on the strangeness of the pressure I feel to comply by it). There is lots of literature out there that comments on how important names are and I recall many of my teachers/instructors in my past who struggled to pronounce names correctly as they noted how significant names are to individuals' self-esteem. As a member of LIS 2323 Literature for Young Adults, I can’t help but to think of a book that’s required for the course (one of 40ish), The Misfits by James Howe. In the book you meet a group of four friends, known as the Gang of Five, who are the “outcasts” within their school and are the constant butt of jokes to the popular students. It’s an easy, enjoyable and funny read that I truly enjoyed even though I’m not considered a young adult based on the age restrictions of being 12-18years old. I’m 22 by the way. Anyway, if you’re looking for a good book that makes a compelling argument not to call others names other than their own, check it out at your local library .
